ID Requirements for Remote Online Notarizations

When getting a document notarized remotely online, verifying your identity is a critical part of the process. Just as with a traditional in-person notarization, the notary must be able to confirm that you are who you claim to be. However, identity verification works differently since the notary and signer are not physically in the same room for RON.

For remote online notarization, you will typically need to provide one form of ID.  We can accept a government-issued photo ID, such as:

  • Driver's license
  • State ID card
  • Passport
  • Military ID
  • Work Permit
  • Permanent Resident Card

During the RON session, you must show your ID to the camera. The notary will visually inspect them to ensure they are valid, unexpired, and match each other and your appearance. Some RON platforms, such as ID credential analysis and knowledge-based authentication, use technology to assist in this process.

It's important to note ID must be valid and unexpired. If your driver's license or passport has expired, it will not be accepted, even as a secondary form of ID. If you have recently changed your name, your IDs should reflect your current legal name.

In addition to ID verification, some states and RON platforms have additional requirements. For instance, you may need to answer "challenge questions" about your credit history or personal background to prove your identity further. You may also need to consent to having your ID documentation retained as part of the notarization record.

While the ID requirements for RON may seem strict, they serve an important purpose. Notarization relies on the notary's ability to verify the signer's identity and confirm they are participating willingly. In a digital environment, robust identity verification measures are essential to preventing fraud and maintaining the integrity of the notarization process.

So before your RON session, check the specific ID requirements with your notary or platform. Have your IDs ready to show to the camera, and be prepared for any additional verification steps. With proper ID verification, RON can provide a secure, efficient way to get your documents legally notarized from the comfort of your own home or office.
